UI celebrates Latinx Heritage Month in Dining Halls

Dining halls at the University of Illinois celebrated National Hispanic Heritage Month by
serving foods from Hispanic and Latinx cultures.

Hispanic Heritage Month takes place from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15. For many, it is a time
to recognize and celebrate the cultural influence of Hispanic people in America. At the
University of Illinois, part of it is the annual celebration that occurs in dining halls.
Ikenberry Dining Hall served traditional Hispanic dishes, including horchata, rice and
beans, and fried plantains.
Students of all backgrounds served themselves these meals, and multiple Hispanic students felt especially connected when observing their options.
“It felt like home as soon as I walked in,” said freshman Elizabeth Rodriguez. “Just the smell reminded me of meals my mom would make.”
While both Ikenberry and Pennsylvania Avenue Dining Hall put this event together, it was directed by Illinois’ La Casa Cultural Latina.
“Our Asst. Director Julio oversaw this event,” said Mariana Ortega, a representative from the cultural house.
La Casa’s main goal is to expand and welcome the Latinx community at the University of Illinois. They hold multiple events year round and encourage students to join them for said events during Hispanic Heritage Month.
“Catch us again tonight at Ikenberry Dining Hall for the Hispanic Heritage Month Themed meal,” read a caption from @lacasaillinois on Instagram.
La Casa posts reminders for similar events on their Instagram. Some Illinois students heard of the dining hall celebration through La Casa’s social media.
"I cook a lot at home,” said Micaela Vela. “I was really excited to hear that these kind of options are available.”
During Hispanic Heritage Month, La Casa oversaw other events, as well, including trivia nights, lectures, and film screenings.
“Events like these are what make them feel welcome,” said Vela. “I think every school should do similarly for Hispanic students.”

La Casa Cultural Latina is located on Nevada St. Students are in the building talking to representatives, discussing events, and using study rooms.
